ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a body has been found inside a car at apartments near South Carolina State University.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said deputies also investigated a call about shots fired nearby a short time before the body was found around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, but investigators don’t know if the gunfire and the death are related.

Authorities say an autopsy determined 22-year-old Keyshawn Johnson was shot several times. He is not a student at the university.

Ravenell said in a statement that the autopsy results should help clarify the investigation.

The university issued an alert early Wednesday for students on the campus across the street from the apartments to “shelter in place” because of a shooting. The school referred questions to the sheriff.
