GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is signing a law that specifies how the state will divide the money it’s receiving because of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Legislators passed Senate Bill 2002 during a special session last week, and Bryant signed it Wednesday evening in Gulfport.
The six southernmost counties will receive about 70 percent of the $750 million that BP PLC is paying Mississippi for economic damages. The new law also includes earmarked projects around the state, with some money coming from the oil spill settlement and some from $50 million Mississippi is borrowing by issuing bonds.
Bryant on Friday signed the session’s House Bill 1 , creating a state lottery to fund transportation. Getting the lottery into operation will take several months, at least.
