COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi woman whose uterus ruptured during childbirth has been awarded more than $2 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against an OB-GYN.

The Columbus Dispatch reports a jury awarded Talanda Blevins the funds on Friday. She sued Dr. James Holzhauer for negligence in 2016.

Blevins’ attorney argued Holzhauer induced labor before the child’s head was in the proper position, waited too long to perform a cesarean section, didn’t perform the hysterectomy when he should have and repeatedly left Blevins’ bedside to go home.

Holzhauer said he acted in the patient’s best interest and followed appropriate standards for care.

Court records show Holzhauer ultimately performed four surgeries, after which Blevins said another physician had to repair damage caused during the earlier surgeries.
