Capitals responsible for new rule: No more keg stands with Stanley Cup

The Washington Capitals soon could leave a unique mark on Stanley Cup history and lore, thanks to their hard partying.

The Hockey Hall of Fame, which is responsible for caring for the Cup, wants players to cut out the “keg stands” they became known to do this summer, reports say.

“I have nothing against keg stands,” Phil Pritchard, the Keeper of the Cup, told USA Today. “My goal is only to preserve the Stanley Cup. If they could do keg stands without grabbing the Cup, then great. But if you put weight on it, then it will affect the Cup.”

The Capitals have completed everyone’s individual days with the Cup this summer, and everyone from Alex Ovechkin to the likes of Jimmy Fallon have been seen drinking out of the Cup upside-down.

“Some guys really want to do it, but they get it, and they don’t want to damage the Cup,” Pritchard said. “Players have a lot of respect for the Cup they know how hard they worked to earn it.”
