CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Carlsbad’s Labor Day parade was canceled when members of the southeastern New Mexico city’s fire department were the only would-be participants to show up.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that parade promoter Michael Wayne Smart and Fire Chief Rick Lopez expressed disappointment with the lack of participation and resulting cancellation Monday.
City Council member Jason Shirley said people’s attention may have been diverted on Monday because of the start of homecoming week at Carlsbad High School.
Smart has organized parades in Carlsbad for more than 20 years and he said the annual Fourth of July parade had over 100 entrants.
He said he feels good about organizing that parade again next year but that he’s not sure there will be a Labor Day parade next year.
