BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Officials in Burlington, Vermont have announced the city is phasing out cashiers at its three parking garages and replacing them with “Pay on Foot” stations.

The Burlington Free Press reports the city is installing six stations over the next few weeks.

The first two stations went up last weekend in the College Street Garage, and the next two will be installed at Lakeview Garage Friday.

Marketplace Garage will get the stations in mid-October.

Department of Public Works spokesman Robert Goulding says the stations will hopefully reduce lines that develop at the garages during peak hours.

Department Director Chapin Spencer says the stations will help the city save money and allow the city to develop new services such as discounted parking for downtown service workers.
