The House marked the one-year anniversary of Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s return to Congress from a life-threatening shooting with hugs and high fives on Friday.
The chamber broke into sustained applause after Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy noted Louisiana Republican’s milestone from the House microphones.
“I’m just so glad that Steve is back with us,” Mr. McCarthy said.
Mr. Scalise and three other people were shot by a sole gunman during a Republican baseball practice in June 2017. He suffered severe injuries from a shot to the hip that required a lengthy hospital stay and multiple surgeries.
He made a triumphant return to the House chamber on Sept. 28, 2017, and spoke about this ordeal from the floor.
“You have no idea how great this feels to be back here at work in the people’s House,” Mr. Scalise, smiling broadly, told his colleagues at the time.
He credited his Capitol Police security detail for taking down the gunman and saving the lives of himself and fellow GOP players.
