WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) - A fatal shark attack has residents of a Cape Cod town discussing what can be done to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The Cape Cod Times reports that hundreds of people attended a community meeting in Wellfleet Thursday night, but there was little consensus on how to proceed in the future.
Arthur Medici of Revere died Sept. 15 after being bitten by a shark while boogie-boarding off Newcomb Hollow Beach. It was Massachusetts’ first fatal shark attack in 80 years.
Some residents suggested that steps be taken to cull the population of great white sharks and the gray seals that are attracting the predators to Cape waters. But experts said that would be difficult and could violate federal law.
A number of meeting participants complained about spotty cellphone coverage on beaches.
