“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert ripped Jim Acosta during his monologue Wednesday night after the CNN chief White House correspondent got into a combative back-and-forth with President Trump during a presser in New York earlier that day.

“And when fake news CNN’s Jim Acosta got a chance to ask a question, he made a suggestion to the president,” Mr. Colbert said, playing a clip of the exchange.

In the exchange, Mr. Acosta suggested that Mr. Trump call on one of the female reporters in the room to ask about the sexual misconduct allegations lodged against his Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh.

“If you don’t mind, after I’m finished, if … one of our female colleagues could go after me, that would be great. Mr. President, just to follow up on these allegations against Brett Kavanaugh —” Mr. Acosta said.

“What does he mean by that?” the president interjected. “Explain. What does that mean?”

“I think it would be great if a female —” Mr. Acosta replied.

“What does it mean?” Mr. Trump interjected again. “No, what does it mean?”

“It would be great if a female reporter could ask a question about this issue. So, if you don’t mind,” Mr. Acosta said.

“I wouldn’t mind that at all,” the president retorted. “Wouldn’t mind at all. Wouldn’t make any difference to me. Go ahead.”

Mr. Colbert, a frequent critic of Mr. Trump, lampooned the president for the exchange but also criticized Mr. Acosta, who publicly tussles with the president often.

“Man, woman, animal, doesn’t make any difference to me. I will answer all your questions in a bone-chilling ramble,” the comedian said, mimicking the president. “That being said, kind of a d—- move, Jim Acosta. We get it, you’re woke.”

Mr. Acosta appeared on “The Late Show” last month, telling Mr. Colbert that he never sets out to make himself part of the story, but that sometimes he can’t help himself in challenging the president on his myriad falsehoods.
