President Trump and Japan Foreign Minister Shinzo Abe agreed Wednesday to negotiate a new trade deal between the two countries.
A centerpiece of the proposed deal would be increased U.S. car sales in Japan and Japanese agriculture sales in the U.S.
The negotiations, which are part of Mr. Trump’s aggressive push to redo U.S. trade deals around the world, was announced after Mr. Trump and Mr. Abe met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
“This was something that for various reasons over the years Japan was unwilling to do and now they are willing to do,” Mr. Trump said at the meeting with Mr. Abe. “So we are very happy about that and I’m sure we will come to a satisfactory conclusion.”
Mr. Trump said the new deal would be better for both countries.
“It can only be better for the United States. It couldn’t get any worse than what has happened over the years,” he said.
