President Trump said the allegations of three women who accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct are “false accusations.”
“These are all false, to me, accusations,” Mr. Trump said at a press conference in New York. “What they’ve done to this man is incredible.”
Asked if the women are lying, the president said, “I won’t get into that game. This is one of the highest quality people I’ve ever met.”
Asked if the White House should have requested a more thorough FBI background check of the nominee, Mr. Trump said, “There was nothing to investigate.”
“It’s not going to change any of the Democrats’ minds,” he said. “They’re obstructionists. They’ve destroyed a man’s reputation. What they’ve done to the man’s family, what they’ve done to his children…. And they laugh like hell. It wouldn’t have mattered if the FBI came back with the cleanest score. It wouldn’t have made a difference.”
He predicted, “We will get votes from the Democrats if we win. They’re in states that I won by 30-40 points.”
But asked later if he would consider pulling Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, the president replied, “If I thought he was guilty of something like this, yeah, sure.”
“I have to watch tomorrow,” he said, referring to a high-stakes Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Judge Kavanaugh and one of his accusers will testify. “I’m going to be watching. I’m going to see what happens tomorrow. It’s possible they would be convincing.”
