Scott Adams, the famous cartoonist and social commentator who was one of the first to predict President Trump’s electoral success, told fans this week that Judge Brett Kavanaugh is “largely guaranteed” to be confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court.
The creator of “Dilbert” and author of “Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter,” told fans Tuesday that Judge Kavanaugh did himself many favors by appearing on Fox News Monday evening.
“Kavanaugh, the worst thing he could have done, he didn’t do anything like that,” Mr. Scott said of the judge’s response to psychologist and California college professor Christine Blasey Ford.
Ms. Blasey Ford claims that she was the victim of an attempted rape by the judge while the two were in high school over three decades ago. Her allegations have yet to be corroborated.
“The worst thing he could have done is to be aggressive and sort of alpha male — you know — and kind of come at it hard,” Mr. Adams said of the judge’s Fox interview. “Some people are calling it sort of the Clarence Thomas effect where you have the booming voice and you declare vehemently your innocence. Now we might still see that at some future time, but instead he went completely in the opposite direction. So he said that he was a virgin in high school and for several years after. [I] did not see that coming. How did that affect things? Well, it’s going to get him nominated or its going to get him on the court.”

“I would say the odds of him being kept off the court now are close to zero,” Mr. Adams continued. “The problem is the entire allegations were built on the notion that he’s this kind of guy, and not only did he admit that he was a virgin during all those years and the years after — and I’m not making fun of him. It’s an excellent defense because if the question is, ’Is he that kind of a guy?’ or ’Was he that kind of a guy?’ You can’t say for sure that a virgin wouldn’t do bad things. … That doesn’t make sense. But if you try to figure out if he’s that kind of a person, well that’s a really good defense. … By being sensitive and being vulnerable, admitting that he was a virgin during those years, which wasn’t the cool thing to do, I think he’s largely guaranteed that he’s going to get on the court.”
Mr. Adams said that it is impossible to know if Judge Kavanaugh made a calculated defense for the interview, but noted visible emotions — he seemed embarrassed and on the brink of tears regarding his teenage virginity — as an indicator of truth.
Ms. Blasey Ford is scheduled to testify before Senate lawmakers on Thursday, followed afterward by Judge Kavanaugh.
Republicans plan to hold a committee vote Friday morning on Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination.
A full Senate vote could be held over the weekend.
