TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Billionaire activist Tom Steyer says he will put up more than $5 million to help elect Andrew Gillum and other Democrats in Florida.
His group, NextGen America, is going to spend $5.2 million ahead of the November elections. The group said that the money will be go to digital ads, mail and field programs meant to turn out young voters.
Steyer backed Gillum before the Tallahassee mayor won the Democratic primary. Gillum is running against former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis in the general election.
Steyer, who is from California, tried to help Charlie Crist in the 2014 election but Crist lost to incumbent Gov. Rick Scott.
Steyer’s help comes at a time when the Republican Governors Association has started spending millions on ads going after Gillum.
