President Trump said Tuesday that progress toward denuclearizing North Korea was “far greater than anyone would know.”
The White House is in the process of setting up a second summit between Mr. Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un, chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
“I have much personal correspondence with Chairman Kim and I think we will do something that is good for Chairman Kim and good for North Korea and also good for the rest of the world,” Mr. Trump said as he arrived at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.
The meeting between the two leaders would aim at building on the denuclearization commitment Mr. Kim made to Mr. Trump at the June summit in Singapore.
“Chairman Kim has been dealing with us,” Mr. Trump said. “We have made tremendous progress, far greater than the media would understand. It has been really a very good relationship
Mr. Trump’s upbeat assessment followed a three-day meeting last week between Mr. Kim and South Korea President Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang, where Mr. Kim agreed to close a key missile site and possibly dismantle the country’s main nuclear facility in return for unspecified concessions by the U.S.
