One of CNN’s legal commentators used airtime Tuesday to make a moral equivalence between Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Bill Cosby, the disgraced celebrity who was found guilty in a court of law on three counts of aggravated indecent assault.
Criminal defense attorney Yodit Tewolde told the network’s Brooke Baldwin that it was “disturbing” to watch the reaction to Cosby’s sentencing by citizens who simultaneously expect President Trump’s top pick for the U.S. Supreme Court to be considered innocent until proven guilty.
Judge Kavanaugh has been accused by California professor Christine Blasey Ford of sexual misconduct at a party while the two were in high school over three decades ago. He has unequivocally denied her claims and will testify under oath before lawmakers Thursday regarding the alleged incident.
“I’m scrolling through Twitter and I’m looking at people actually saying and applauding the judge and the sentence, and then in the same breath wanting to defend Kavanaugh,” Ms. Tewolde said.”It’s disturbing to me because … this is a monumental defining moment this week when you have someone like Cosby going to prison, and then in the same breath having Kavanaugh possibly going to the highest court in the land.”
Cosby, who faced dozens of sexual misconduct accusations by women, will spend three to 10 years in state prison for drugging and molesting former Temple University athletics administrator Andrea Constand in 2004.
“Anyone who’s defending Kavanaugh could not in the same breath now applaud this verdict that the judge has handed down in the same breath. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Ms. Tewolde continued.
Ms. Blasey Ford, a California psychologist and college professor, is scheduled to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Judge Kavanaugh will testify afterward.
