ASHBURN — Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Monday tackle Trent Williams underwent a minor knee procedure and should be fine for when the team faces the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 8.
The operation, Gruden said, was a “bursa sac cleanup” and was previously scheduled to be taken care of during the Redskins’ bye week. Last season, Williams had knee surgery in December after reoccurring knee pain caused him to miss six games throughout the year.
The rehab process kept Williams out until training camp, but the offensive lineman admitted to still be bothered by pain occasionally.
“It’s something he could play through but something he wants to get cleaned up because it’s irritating him quite a bit,” Gruden said.
Williams isn’t the only member of the Redskins needing the bye week to heal. Right tackle Morgan Moses suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win against the Packers, while running back Adrian Peterson sprained his ankle and cornerback Josh Norman hurt his hamstring.
Gruden said the bye week was coming at a “good time.”
“We’re a little bit beat up on the offensive line,” Gruden said. “Shawn Lavauo needs the bye week. Obviously, AP needs the bye week, so offensively it really came at a pretty good time. Defensively I think we probably could have used it a little bit later, but we’re in good shape right now on defense, but offensively it came at a good time.”
