The New York Giants might be finally moving away from an unpopular former first-round draft pick.

The Giants will bench right tackle Ereck Flowers in favor of undrafted rookie Chad Wheeler for their Week 3 game against the Houston Texans, multiple reports said Sunday.

Flowers was the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he quickly grew unpopular with the New York fanbase by allowing frequent sacks.

Flowers was New York’s left tackle before Nate Solder signed with the Giants last offseason, shifting Flowers to the right side. The Giants also attempted to trade Flowers last spring.

Wheeler was prepped during Giants practices throughout the week to see significant playing time Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said. Wheeler will face a difficult test Sunday — Houston’s J.J. Watt.
