Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday that the Senate is plowing ahead with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, vowing that President Trump’s pick will win confirmation.
Mr. McConnell urged the attendees at the annual Values Voters Summit not to get rattled by the ongoing fight over Mr. Kavanaugh.
“President Trump has nominated a stunningly successful individual,” Mr. McConnell said at the annual Values Voters Summit in Washington. “You’ve watched the fight. You’ve watched the tactics. Here is what I want to tell you. In the near future, Judge Kavanaugh will be on the United States Supreme Court.”
The Kentucky Republican said Mr. Trump and GOP-controlled congress are moving the nation in a more center-right direction, touting their passage of tax cuts and describing the economy as booming.
Mr. McConnell said one of the most consequential decisions he has made from his leadership perch was to delay the confirmation of President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, and then leading the confirmation last year of Neil Gorsuch to the high court.
He also assured the gathering of Christian conservatives that the GOP has remade the lower courts by appointing 26 circuit court judges over the past two years, and said there are more to come.
“These are lifetime appointments,” Mr. McConnell said. “If you want to have a long time impact on what kind of country we are going to have for the next generation, the single most consequential thing we can do is these lifetime appointments of men and women to the court who believe the job of the judge is to follow the law.”
