The head of a conservative group said Friday it would set a dangerous precedent if Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations against Judge Kavanaugh derail his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Gary L. Bauer, president of American Values, said he is praying for Ms. Ford, but said the decades-old allegations she has made against Mr. Kavanaugh cannot be proven.

“What she is saying is unproven and I would argue is unprovable,” Mr. Bauer said at the annual Values Voters Summit, which is sponsored by the Family Research Council.

“There is a reason that most laws and most crimes have statutes of limitations because a week after a crime it is difficult to recreate what happened,” he said. “Now look we can’t prove what she said, but there is something we can prove and that is Judge Kavanaugh’s character.”

Mr. Bauer said women that have known Mr. Kavanaugh have praised him.

“I would suggest that you, including women who have men in their lives, who have fathers and husbands, and boyfriend and brother and sons, shouldn’t want a country where after a lifetime of decency the man in your life can be ruined by someone stepping up and saying 36 years ago he did this to me,” he said. “That is not what this country is about.”

“Where does Judge Kavanaugh go to get his reputation back?” he said. “My friends, I pray that we will have United States Senator swill 100 senators that are decent and moral and good as Judge Kavanaugh.”

Mr. Bauer said the stakes are high in the judicial battle, and said that Democrats will do whatever they can to stop the court from becoming more pro-life.

“The left is scared to death that at some point there might be five justices on the Supreme Court that will actually make a ruling that could save few babies,” he said. “That to them would be a tragedy.”
