TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey employers added 1,600 jobs in August but the unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced the Bureau of Labor Statistics data from last month on Thursday.

The new jobs are just a fraction of what the department posted initially in July and about a quarter of the updated estimates.

Preliminary July data showing 13,000 new jobs were revised down to 6,600.

Despite the smaller growth the department says the state has added 61,500 jobs year over year.

The biggest gains were in trade and transportation, which added 2,600 jobs though other sectors like business, hospitality, manufacturing, and financial services contracted.

The national unemployment rate for August was an unchanged 3.9 percent.
