WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Graduate students at Brandeis University have ratified their first labor contract with the school’s administration.

A union representing the students says a three-year agreement was approved Tuesday evening that will increase pay for teaching assistants by up to 56 percent.

It’s believed to be the first contract for graduate students at a private university since federal officials gave them the right to unionize in 2016.

Graduate student Kalee Hall said the contract shows “we can make Brandeis better by all working together and negotiating.”

University officials did not immediately provide comment.

The deal also creates caps on graduate students’ weekly workloads and gives them a voice in administrative decisions.

Harvard University said in May it will negotiate with its newly unionized graduate students, while Columbia University says it will not.
