ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Members of a New York Army National Guard unit that traces its lineage to the “Harlem Hellfighters” of World War I fame are headed to Europe for centennial commemorative events this month.
The state Division of Military and Naval Affairs says five soldiers from the Manhattan-based 369th Sustainment Brigade will participate in events being held in France starting Wednesday and running through Sept. 26.
The brigade carries the lineage of the 369 Infantry Regiment, an all-black National Guard unit from New York City that distinguished itself during combat on the Western Front. The regiment was given the nickname “Harlem Hellfighters” by the Germans.
Other New York Army National Guard members were in Europe earlier this summer to commemorate the centennial of the United States fighting in the First World War.
