WINOOSKI, Vt. (AP) - Voters in a Vermont city won’t be casting ballots in November on an initiative that would have begun the process to allow non-citizens to vote in local election.
Winooski City Manager Jessie Baker tells the Burlington Free Press the Monday decision by the city council was driven by the need for more discussion and engagement with the community on the issue.
Winooski is one of Vermont’s more diverse communities. The city council had approved allowing voters to decide in November whether the city should make a charter change to allow non-residents to vote. The change would have to be approved by the Legislature.
Mayor Seth Leonard says he would “love to see all-resident voting become a reality,” but perhaps a March vote would be better.
