ASHBURN — The Washington Redskins brought in quarterback Paxton Lynch for a workout Monday, a source said.
Lynch, drafted 26th overall in 2016, was released in September after two rocky seasons with the Denver Broncos. After the Broncos traded up for Lynch in 2016, the 24-year-old quarterback failed to beat out Trevor Siemian for the starting job in his first two years, and only played when Siemian was injured or was benched. In five appearances, Lynch threw for 792 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.
He was demoted to the Broncos’ third string in August, getting surpassed by quarterback Chad Kelly. While he initially made the Broncos’ 53-man roster this season, Lynch was cut for the Broncos to sign Kevin Hogan, who spent the offseason with the Redskins.
The Redskins don’t need to add another quarterback to their 53-man roster, but Lynch still has practice squad eligibility — meaning the team could take a flyer on a former first-rounder with room to develop.
Lynch, however, wasn’t the only former first-rounder the Redskins worked out on Monday.
Coach Jay Gruden said the team worked out 2015 first-round wide receiver Breshad Perriman, who was cut by the Baltimore Ravens in September. Gruden said the Redskins worked out four to five players.
The Redskins might also have a roster spot available soon with running back Rob Kelley set to miss 4-6 weeks with a toe injury, Gruden said.
