One of the stars of “Black-ish” was wearing her politics on more than her sleeve at Monday night’s Emmy awards.

Jenifer Lewis was wearing Nike sneakers and a custom Nike sweater on the red carpet before the program, where “Black-ish” was nominated for five awards, including best situation comedy.

“I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality,” she told Variety.

Nike made the former NFL quarterback who led the national-anthem protests that have hit the league for much of the last two seasons the face of its latest “Just Do It” campaign, featuring the new slogan “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

Ms. Lewis told Variety that she asked “what can I do? What can I do that’s meaningful? I’ll wear Nike. I’ll wear Nike to say ’Thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance!’ We need more corporate America to stand up also.”

On “Black-ish,” Ms. Lewis plays Ruby Johnson, mother to Andre Johnson, the central character of the ABC show who is played by executive producer Anthony Anderson.
