CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he’s proposing new measures aimed at cutting down on youth smoking, vaping and electronic cigarette use.
Emanuel said Monday he’ll introduce an ordinance at this week’s City Council meeting that calls for higher taxes on liquid nicotine used in vaporizer and e-cigarettes. The proposal would raise the tax from 80 cents per device and 55 cents per milliliter of liquid nicotine to $1.50 per device and $1.20 per milliliter.
Emanuel also wants to require retailers to keep all tobacco products and accessories, including vaping and e-cigarette products, behind the sales counter.
Emanuel says Chicago is saying no to “big tobacco” and marketing that hooks young people on harmful nicotine products.
