Beatles singer-songwriter Paul McCartney has revealed that the “mad captain” in a song about climate change from his newly released solo album refers to President Trump.
In a BBC interview, Mr. McCartney said the track “Despite Repeated Warnings,” described as “a diatribe against climate change deniers,” included a veiled reference to the U.S. president.
“People who deny climate change … I just think it’s the most stupid thing ever,” Mr. McCartney said in the Thursday article.
“So I just wanted to make a song that would talk about that and basically say, ’Occasionally, we’ve got a mad captain sailing this boat we’re all on and he is just going to take us to the iceberg [despite ]being warned it’s not a cool idea,’” he said.
Asked whom the “mad captain” was, the 76-year-old McCartney replied, “Well, I mean obviously it’s Trump, but there’s plenty of them about. He’s not the only one.”

The song from the album “Egypt Station” released Sept. 7 includes the lyrics, “Those who shout the loudest/May not always be the smartest.”
Mr. Trump was slammed by Democrats and climate activists when he announced in June he would withdraw from the 2015 Paris agreement, a non-binding UN accord aimed at limiting the increase in global greenhouse-gas emissions.
The U.S. has led the world in reducing carbon-dioxide emissions even as global emissions have increased.
