COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue was in Rhode Island this week to gather public comment from farmers anxious over President Donald Trump’s trade policy.
Perdue visited a cranberry bog Monday in rural Coventry for a meet-and-greet and took questions. The Providence Journal reports Perdue made the visit as part of an overall effort to speak with farmers in every state.
Perdue says the president’s policies may lead to a new wave of trade agreements with smaller countries and economies. He also gave a favorable response when asked about federal assistance to farms of different sizes.
No one who attended the event - including various state agriculture officials - said they could recall a U.S. agriculture secretary ever visiting Rhode Island.
