Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department to recover all of the materials found on the laptop of former Rep. Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat, the conservative watchdog group said Tuesday.
The lawsuit claims the Justice Department denied two Freedom of Information Act requests for the emails, seized by the FBI in September 2016.
Judicial Watch is seeking all records retrieved from the laptop search along with any communication among FBI officials related to the investigation.
Last month, RealClearInvestigations reported that the FBI reviewed only 3,077 of the nearly 700,000 emails found on the laptop as it sought evidence that Weiner had lewd exchanges with a 15-year old girl.
Weiner shared the laptop with his then-wife Huma Abedin, who was a top aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. The discovery of emails between Ms. Clinton and Ms. Abedin prompted former FBI Director James Comey to tell Congress that he was reopening the Clinton private server investigation mere days before the election.
Although some classified emails were discovered on the laptop, Mr. Comey told Congress on Nov. 6, 2016, that he would again recommend not pursuing charges against Ms. Clinton.
“The Anthony Weiner laptop-Clinton email cover up by the Obama DOJ and FBI is central to uncovering the corrupt politicization of those agencies,” said Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch president. “The same FBI that provided cover for Hillary Clinton was going full bore against then-candidate Trump and this lawsuit aims to uncover the full truth about that corruption.”
In September 2017, Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sending sexually explicit messages to the 15-year-old girl.
