AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s agriculture commissioner says a proposed trade pact could lead to more Maine goods like potatoes and milk being shipped in Canada.
Maine Public reports Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Walter Whitcomb called the new deal a “monumental change” in dairy policy.
President Donald Trump said he plans to sign the North American trade agreement recently hammered out between the United States, Canada and Mexico by late November. The pact would in part give American dairy farmers more access to the Canadian market.
Maine Dairy Industry Association Executive Director Julie-Marie Bickford says dairy in Maine is a $500 million per year industry.
Changes won’t happen overnight. Whitcomb says there probably won’t be a lot of Maine products going to Canada in the short run.
