Leonard Leo, executive vice president of the Federalist Society, called the battle to confirm incoming Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh one of the “most contentious we have ever seen.”
Mr. Leo’s organization has been at the center of both of President Trump’s court picks, having helped the president craft his short list of nominees. And he’s known Justice Kavanaugh for a quarter century.
“This is an important defining moment for the rule of law in our country,” Mr. Leo told The Washington Times, standing outside the Senate chamber moments after the confirmation vote.
He said Mr. Trump made Supreme Court picks a key issue during his campaign and has continued to press the issue now in office, and he also praised White House Counsel Don McGahn and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who powered the nominee through over unprecedented opposition.
“As Supreme Court confirmations go this is certainly among the most contentious we have ever seen,” he said.
