Sen. Charles E. Grassley said Friday that he’s not sure what the Senate will decide on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, just hours before a key vote is set to begin on Friday.

The cloture vote to end debate on Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

“As of now, I don’t really know, and I don’t know whether anybody else does,” Mr. Grassley told the hosts of Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” when asked if Republicans have the votes.

Three Republicans — Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona — remain tight-lipped about which way their vote will go on the Supreme Court nomination.

Democratic Sen. Joe Machin of West Virginia is also still undecided.

Mr. Grassley defended his three GOP colleagues and their decision to play it close to the vest leading up to the first vote Friday morning.

He explained they are “personal” and “very quiet about it” because they want their constituents to know they’re taking the decision seriously.

“I’ve been in that position, so I’m not going to hold it against them,” he said.
