WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - More than 200 Vermont inmates housed in a Pennsylvania state prison due to overcrowding have been moved to a private prison in Mississippi.
The Vermont Department of Corrections said Thursday that the 215 inmates were flown to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi, run by CoreCivic.
The move happened following complaints about treatment, medical care and several inmate deaths at the Camp Hill prison in Pennsylvania.
Vermont Corrections Commissioner Lisa Menard says the Camp Hill prison didn’t use Vermont’s disciplinary system, which states that the maximum amount of time somebody can be in disciplinary segregation is 30 days. She says Pennsylvania’s was longer and that the Mississippi prison will use Vermont’s systems.
Prisoners’ rights advocates say the move puts even more distance between inmates and their families.
