The White House expressed confidence Thursday that the Senate will confirm Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh in the wake of an FBI report with no new findings about a decades-old sexual assault complaint.
“We certainly hope so,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “We feel, as Chairman [Chuck] Grassley said a few minutes ago, we didn’t learn anything new.”
She told reporters that the White House is pleased with the FBI probe and pushed back against Democrats’ accusations that the White House restricted the probe.
“We allowed the FBI to do exactly what they do best,” she said. “We haven’t micromanaged this process. We accommodated all of the Senate’s requests. The president was very clear about that and allowed the FBI to make those decisions.”
Mr. Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the FBI report delivered early Thursday contains “no hint of misconduct” by the nominee. Judge Kavanaugh denies accusations by Christine Blasey Ford that he sexually assaulted her when they were teens in the early 1980s.
