PITTSBURGH (AP) - Graduate assistants at the University of Pittsburgh are having their case heard over whether they can seek to unionize.
Hearings on the matter before the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board resumed Wednesday. The Post-Gazette reports the university is arguing the graduate assistants are students not employees, and are not qualified to unionize.
The Pitt Grad Union petitioned the labor board in December for the right to hold an election. Students have said they want greater transparency in the decision-making process that impacts their working conditions, along with protections against discrimination and harassment.
Earlier this year, the labor board sided with students seeking to hold a union election at Penn State - but the vote ultimately failed.
