NEW YORK (AP) - TBS is touting a ratings victory from its broadcast of the AL wild-card game, though some viewers on its digital app complained of technical issues leading to accidental blackouts.
The telecast of the New York Yankees’ 7-2 win over the Oakland Athletics was the most-watched program on cable Wednesday night, based on overnight delivery. It reached a peak of 7.5 million viewers, the best for an AL wild-card game ever on TBS. Its average viewership of 6.4 million was up 51 percent from TBS’s 2016 broadcast of the AL game between Baltimore and Toronto and 45 percent from last year’s NL game between Arizona and Colorado.
TBS broadcasted both wild-card games in 2012 and ’13 and has alternated hosting the AL and NL wild-card games since.
Turner also said viewership was up 120 percent on its digital platforms versus the 2016 AL game, though some viewers complained on social media the broadcast was blacked out. The technical issues are believed to have been resolved after the first few innings.
