CHICAGO (AP) - Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky was among more than 50 people were cited by police at a Chicago protest calling for higher wages and union rights for fast food workers.
The protest by the Illinois Democrat and the others took place Thursday outside fast-food giant McDonald’s corporate headquarters.
The demonstration is part of the “Fight for $15,” a national movement seeking to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour for fast food, child care, airlines and other workers. The group also wants the right to start unions or join existing ones.
Chicago police say that although 52 people were issued citations for trespassing on private property, none were taken into custody.
In a statement, Schakowsky said she is proud to support workers in the Fight for $15 who are “striking and protesting all across the country today for union rights.”
