Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said Thursday he feels “very good” about Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court following the completion of the FBI probe into the sexual misconduct allegations against the nominee.
After GOP senators had a chance to review the supplemental background information on the nominee, party leaders emerged to throw their support behind the judge, saying there was no corroborating evidence that he sexually assaulted anyone in high school or college.
“Hopefully, we’re 48 hours away from having someone new on the Supreme Court,” Mr. Grassley said.
The Iowa Republican said he feels positive about Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination based on his qualifications, not based on a vote count for his confirmation.
GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski, Jeff Flake and Susan Collins have not signaled how they’ll vote yet, though Ms. Collins and Mr. Flake said they thought the FBI report was thorough.
All Democrats except for Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia have said they’ll vote no.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said nothing the GOP could do would satisfy the Democrats.
“They’ve always got a reason why the goal post has to be moved,” he said.
