Lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford, the chief accuser of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, said Thursday that the FBI’s updated background investigation was a “stain” on the confirmation process and the FBI because it wasn’t thorough enough.
In a letter to FBI Director Christopher A. Wray the lawyers listed eight witnesses they said should have been contacted but weren’t, including longtime friends of Ms. Blasey Ford, her husband, and the ex-FBI agent who conducted a polygraph exam in August.
Ms. Blasey Ford herself also wasn’t interviewed.
“The ’investigation’ conducted over the past five days is a stain on the process, on the FBI and on our American ideal of justice,” the lawyers wrote.
The FBI interviewed 10 witnesses, including the people Ms. Blasey Ford has publicly identified as being at the 1982 high school party where she says Judge Kavanaugh groped her, tried to strip her clothes and stifled her cries for help. None of those people has corroborated her account, said Republicans who had been briefed on or read the 46 pages of new investigative material.
Those Republicans said the FBI probe seemed thorough.
Democrats have disagreed, pointing to the lack of an interview with Ms. Blasey Ford and others they said would have shed light on what happened 36 years ago.
