DETROIT (AP) - A Miami-based foundation is giving a $20 million boost to Detroit’s top arts institutions and the city’s smaller arts groups.
The Knight Foundation announced Wednesday the grants include about $8 million to support innovation at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx Organization, Michigan Opera Theatre and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The foundation describes them as “anchor institutions.”
The Detroit News reports 10 mid-sized arts organizations will share in another $3.2 million, mostly to help them develop sustainable, long-term business models.
Another $6 million will go to the Knight Arts Challenge, a competition open to individual artists and arts groups.
Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibargüen says the foundation has “a really long-term commitment to Detroit” and has awarded $52 million since 2012 to its arts community.
