TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has dropped a lawsuit that claimed a jail in Washington state was violating the rights of mentally ill people by denying them basic mental health treatment.

The News Tribune reports the ACLU of Washington state says it agreed to drop the suit after a federal judge found earlier this month that the case didn’t meet the requirements to qualify for class-action status.

The ACLU sued the Pierce County Jail in December, claiming inmates were improperly screened for mental health issues, had to wait months to see a mental health provider and were illegally restrained at times.

ACLU attorney Eunice Cho says they are still concerned about the jail conditions for people with mental illness, but this particular case will not proceed.
