Pop diva Taylor Swift announced Tuesday that she had voted for Democrat Phil Bredesen for U.S. Senate in her home state of Tennessee.

In an Instagram post, the singer said she and her mother — “two Tennessee women” — had “voted for the candidate who has proven himself to be reasonable and trustworthy.”

“We want leadership, not fear-based extremism,” she wrote, reminding her followers that early voting in Tennessee ends Thursday, and that the Election Day proper is next Tuesday.

“Please don’t sit this one out,” she implored in her first venture into the political activism that’s now half-expected of entertainment stars.

Ms. Swift had been criticized for years by left-wing activists and entertainers over her refusal to talk politics, with some calling her silence complicity in some or other purportedly-evil political act.

Earlier this month, she engaged in her first politicking, posting a lengthy attack on Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Mr. Bredesen’s Republican opponent in the race.

She announced then that she would be voting for Mr. Bredesen.
