LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Lincoln nonprofit has created a colorful “Kindness Matters” meter in support of homeless women.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Fresh Start Home is a transitional shelter for homeless women in Lincoln. The organization unveiled the repurposed parking meter Monday. The words “Kindness Matters” have been placed on the multicolored meter, which lights up and plays a jingle when coins are put in.

Fresh Start executive director Monica Zinke says the homeless women often report that what they “are not seeing is just some basic kindness from people and people recognizing them as a person.”

Fresh Start’s Michael Reinmiller doesn’t think the meter will raise much money, but he says that’s not its sole purpose. He says the meter is “a visual reminder to just be nice to each other.”
