MABLETON, Ga. (AP) - Police in Georgia have shot and killed a man they said killed his girlfriend’s grandmother and held his girlfriend and her daughter hostage.

Cobb County Police Chief Mike Register told news outlets officers shot and killed 26-year-old James Martin of Austell on Tuesday following a standoff in Mableton.

Police say Martin and been living with his girlfriend, her daughter and her grandmother until Monday, when 80-year-old Faye Spruell ordered him to leave after he attacked Jessica Adams.

Police say Martin returned Tuesday and shot and killed Spruell and held Adams and her daughter hostage.

Register said a SWAT team went in after a brief standoff to rescue Adams and her daughter. They were not hurt. Officers shot and killed Martin.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
