EPPING, N.D. (AP) - About 7,140 gallons of produced water spilled in Williams County when a third-party contractor doing trenching work struck a pipeline.

The state Health Department says the incident happened Thursday about 2 ½ miles southwest of Epping. Pipeline owner Polar Midstream reported it the same day.

Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil that can contain drilling chemicals. State officials say the spill was contained within the trench, and most of it was quickly recovered. The Health Department is working with the company on remediation.
