WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Delaware man who pleaded guilty to stabbing his then-girlfriend has been sentenced to 31 years in prison for the attack and intimidating her before his trial.
The News Journal of Wilmington reported Friday that 52-year-old James Cooper was sentenced as a habitual offender due to previous assault and unlawful sexual contact convictions. A Delaware Department of Justice release says the woman told Cooper to leave her home in February 2017 because he was drunk.
It says Cooper left, but later sneaked into the home through an unlocked door and stabbed her in the chest. It says he called the woman from jail and temporarily dissuaded her from appearing in court, thereby violating a no contact order. The Wilmington man pleaded guilty in June to charges including assault.
