SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A former Salt Lake City mayor says Utah’s natural landscapes and skylines have become overrun with billboards.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday that former Mayor Ralph Becker and his wife are launching Scenic Utah, an initiative devoted to cutting down on what they say is a proliferation of billboards.
Scenic Utah is affiliated with the group Scenic America.
Becker, a professional planner, says he and others have tried for more than a decade to establish a group to promote Utah’s scenery.
Becker has a history of fighting pro-billboard legislation as a lawmaker and mayor.
This has put him in conflict with Reagan Outdoor Advertising. The group created a political action committee to run an anti-Becker sign campaign when Becker ran for a third mayoral term in 2015.
