ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia schools superintendent says he’ll step down Dec. 31.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Fulton County Schools Superintendent Jeff Rose announced Thursday he won’t seek renewal of his contract, citing “personal” reasons. The school district hasn’t released financial terms of his departure.

Rose made the announcement after the school board returned from a closed-door session to discuss his contract. The newspaper asked board chairwoman Linda Bryant if the panel was poised to not renew his contract, and she said no, and that Rose chose to resign.

Bryant says the board hasn’t started to discuss a search process for Rose’s replacement.

Rose became Fulton superintendent in 2016 and the board had extended his contract until October 2019. He was superintendent of the Beaverton School District in Oregon before accepting the Fulton post.
