PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - SAT participation is up in Rhode Island after the test became a graduation requirement, but the percentage of students who had proficient scores in reading and math has declined.
The Providence Journal reports that 95 percent of public high school juniors took the SATs this year, a 16 percent increase from the previous year.
The percentage of students who scored proficient declined from 56 percent to 50 in reading, and from 34 percent to 30 in math.
SAT and PSAT tests became a graduation requirement in 2018 as part of the state’s federal education plan.
State education Commissioner Ken Wagner says it is common to see lower scores when more students take the test.
He says the real comparison of scores will be next year.
