WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Florida records show a 22-month-old drowned this month in his family’s home’s pool.

The state Department of Children and Families tells The Palm Beach Post in a Thursday statement that the department has opened a child death investigation and will continue supporting the boy’s family as they grieve his loss.

Department records show the boy drowned Oct. 5 in Palm Beach County. The department lists his death as accidental.

Investigators determined a sliding-glass door and fence around the pool hadn’t been properly shut when the boy and his family went inside to take a nap after a morning swim.

His drowning is the third this year in the county reported to the department, and the 16th of 17 total child deaths in the county investigated this year by the state.
